wow!!! this messed me up!!! i am so intrigued by this cult and the main character’s exploration of how she ended up getting taken in by them. there is also a good exploration of climate/technology fall out and what that means for children.
the story is told through the main character’s journal entries. it is written in a stream-of-consciousness style which is fitting for her situation, but this also creates an almost complete lack of dialogue (which is what is preventing me from rating this higher). however, i did really enjoy her voice, seeing her come to terms with some of her traumas, and learning about the cult from her point of view.
please be advised that there is a lot of violence against women in the form of mutilation, encouraging them to perform acts of self harm as “sacrifices,” torture, and (not very detailed) sexual assault (one scene in which the main character may still be a teenager, but it is unclear how old she was).
