The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani
4.0

I can honestly say that I learned more about the partition of India from this book than any history classes I ever had. At times I found the text somewhat repetitive, but, after all, it is indicative of how a 12-year-old girl might write and think. There was a lot of "papa loves me," "papa doesn't love me," and other wavering, but that could be realistic. I wasn't totally clear on how much Nisha would actually speak. However, there were many beautiful phrases and ideas. When the partition was announced and people would be divided by religion, Nisha lamented that she then looked at people differently; before she thought of them by their name, what they looked like, and what they did. I wanted the story to go on; maybe there will be a sequel!
