KINGDOMTIDE by RYE CURTIS

Hey guys, look, I read a book by a white guy! A very rare occurrence over here, especially if said white guy isn’t writing queer fiction. Arguably, this is queer fiction, but it’s not a central theme.

So anyway, the reason I read this book is because of good ol’ Dylan Thomas and his literary prize of excellence (not that DT knew anything about the prize).

Excuse the digression.

Let’s get on with it, shall we?

So this book is about a woman in her seventies surviving in the wilderness after her plane crashes in the mountains. It’s a split narrative, so we also see from the point of view of the mountain ranger Deb Lewis, an alcoholic divorcee, who is out searching for the survivor of the plane crash.

Oh, but this book is so much more than its plot. It is full of wisdom and dark humour and perfectly drawn characters who come to life with their little quirks. Ever watched a Cohen Brothers film? This wreaked of that. For example, I can imagine George Clooney playing the character who rubbed chalk on his hands continuously throughout the story due to a fear of moistness.

I honestly cannot believe I am saying this, but I adored this book. I think it is so clever and wise and so beautifully written. I don’t want it to win the DT prize cos I’m rooting for Akwaeke for lyf, but this book is certainly worthy of a lot of time and praise.

I would recommend this book to writers because it is so well crafted and I think there is a lot to be learnt here. I cannot believe there could be a bad word to say about the characterisation.

I think this needs to be on everyone’s radar. Tell me what you thought of it if you’ve read it.
