Right off the bat, the writing didn’t blow me away. Maybe it’s meant to be written like an average person’s diary entries? Maybe that makes it more realistic? This originally started as fictionalized blog entries by the author that got enough of a following for a publisher to pick it up. That’s how it still reads—like a how-to for a doomsday prepper dreaming about surviving the apocalypse. Except on Mars. Once I got into it, I was chortling quite a bit. It’s rather comedic once you get used to the style. And I hear it’s very scientifically accurate, so if you care about that (I don’t and wouldn’t know either way), there’s that. I’ve kind of seen the movie (I think it was on at work one night and I caught pieces of it), and I think the end of the movie was way more dramatic than the end of the book. The end of the book felt like “… that’s it?”
