Book 123: The Graveyard Book Vol. 1 by Neil Gaiman

Another graphic novel to add to my collection. This one is an adaptation of a The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It is a Newbery Prize winner, reviewed for 5th grade and older, ages 10 and up.

The story opens with the murder of a family. the toddler in the family escapes death by wandering off into a graveyard. Ghosts agree to be his parents. He is given the name Nobody (Bod, for short) Owens. The killer continues to seek this boy to finish the job. The book is mostly about the adventures that Bod has in the cemetery where he lives. There is another volume to the story, not sure I will read it.

Interestingly the graphic novel is reviewed for ages 8 and older, grades 3 and up. The murder of Bod's family is the first thing in the book. There are slit throats shown in the illustrations, so if your 8 year olds can handle that the rest is just a boy having adventures with all sorts of supernatural beings. I did enjoy reading this after it got started. The first few pages I was unsure if I was going to finish, but it picked up pretty quickly.
