Plague Birds by Jason Sanford
Nominated for the 2022 Nebula Award for Best Novel.

I’d never heard of this book prior to the release of the shortlist. Upon reading the synopsis, I thought it sounded very interesting. There were indeed aspects of the story that I enjoyed and would’ve liked to see developed (gene-modded humans, AI, etc).
However, the writing style was not to my taste. It’s difficult to explain, but it was a curious blend of what you’d expect in a high fantasy novel and modern/contemporary linguistics. That and the pacing continually pulled me out of the story.
