House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

My opinions on this book are very mixed.

To start with, what’s with the theme of colonisation and racism? The main character, Bryce, is constantly dismissing rebels — those who want to fight against their oppressors — and acts as if they are in the wrong for wanting to destroy those who took everything from them. She even acknowledges that the system is terrible and disgusting but turns a side-eye to it unless it comes to the people she cares about. Her ignorance is shameful.

Something I did enjoy was the friendships. Albeit, some of them seemed a lot like plot devices to get Bryce where SJM wanted her to be by the end of the book, they were still beautiful and the thing I liked the most about this book; along with the healing arc which I think was great.

Speaking of plot devices, the number of characters that were used as them is insane. The only two who I think had something of their own, which wasn’t purely for Bryce, are Ruhn and Hypaxia.

I did enjoy the interactions between Bryce and Hunt. Their banter was great and I adored seeing them working together — although, the repetition made this get old real quick.

This book is way too long! The editors just didn’t edit as well as it should’ve been. There were spelling mistakes, plot holes, things that did not make sense and then the unnecessary 200 pages of extra writing.

The ending was great but should’ve ended earlier and even then if the middle was cut shorter and not excessively dragged out, it would’ve made so much more of an impact.

The highlight of this book is Hunt’s foot fetish and Lele.
