A story about someone who left their hometown and goes back when her mom is dying could be depressing, but Gia is a great character who is strong and committed to her family. There is a lot of tension: her sister is in a terrible marriage to a controlling creep with a mean streak, and half the town thinks Gia is a liar because she testified against the beloved teacher who molested her. Facing all of this in addition to her mother's terminal cancer brings her into contact with people she hoped never to see again including that teacher's family.
I appreciated the complexity of the characters and the way the author showed different people dealing with the past.
