The trigger warnings are very off for this book. The author uses the term "domestic violence" to cover a very wide swath of physical child abuse well into adulthood, as well as bullying, alcoholism, and emotional abuse. There are elements of torture and psychological torture. The abuse will continue up until the main character nearly dies multiple times . This is all written in great detail on the page and not just as memories. If this is triggering for you, I caution that by the end
the abuser has excuses made on their behalf and then you will have a few chapters of a novella from their perspective.
This book has a fascinating premise and a lot of potential, but its hard not to get distracted by the pacing issues. I enjoyed the FMC and MMC overall, but not enough to make me feel like I need to read the next book. It felt like the major scenes were written with lose connectors in between. There are lots of big reveal moments that the characters just don't react to at all, even though they really should. Also, except to see several macguffins, for lack of a better term. The FMC is supposed to have lots of power but chooses not to use it when she has it and then doesn't have it during other times when she needs it. I'm an avid new adult fantasy romance reader and don't usually overthink the world building or plot devices, but they are very in your face in this book. I look forward to seeing what this author creates in the future.
