This one hit me in the FEELS!  Some of Kallmaker’s work might be dated, or even considered offensive by today’s standards, but I find ALL OF THEM to be a great snapshot in time. I didn’t find that as much in this story, except I loved the throwback to flip phones. Also, this one happens to be a toaster oven romance, MY FAVE.

We have a somewhat newly graduated architecture student who’s working on her licensure. After she graduates from a prestigious Frank Lloyd Wright college and takes a job set up by her alma mater, her boyfriend convinces her to move across the country to be with him.

One scary evening, driving in the snow, an older woman saves her from the cold. As most beautiful romances do, we get a very slow unfolding of these women’s lives. Jackie realizes how much she’s given up for her relationship with her boyfriend, and Leah realizes how much she’s been hiding from the world after losing the love of her life.

Honestly, I think this should be required reading for young adult women because TO THIS DAY they think they have to, and still do, sacrifice so much of themselves for relationships…  whether it be with a man or a woman. This kind of thinking and behavior is still rampant in our current society.

This is a quick audiobook, a little over six hours, even with a few novellas acting as epilogues at the end. Abby Craden, of course, does a fantastic job narrating. Craden gives it her all in the most emotional scenes, and the spiciest ones.

If you require a lower angst, quick listen (sure to raise your libido), this one is it.
