The Freaks Came Out to Write: The Definitive History of the Village Voice, the Radical Paper That Changed American Culture by Tricia Romano

emotional informative reflective medium-paced

4.0

Fast paced for such a long book! I love oral histories. This one covered so much, which I suppose could be expected for a book about a publication that spans decades.

At times entertaining and at other times heartbreaking, I was consistently enthralled by the contents of this book. All the subject matters covered, from pop culture and sports to political and social justice matters, every single subject was equally captivating.

I think what worked so well is that it WAS an oral history, straight from the mouths of the numerous people who worked there. And the author didn’t shy away from the fact that, despite it being a revolutionary work, it wasn’t perfect. Not everyone got along, there were problematic people and actions that took place within the community. Every aspect was important and I enjoyed reading it from start to finish.
