The Last Legacy by Adrienne Young

adventurous medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? No

4.0

An enjoyable story, but not as compelling as the other books set in Adrienne Young's "The World of the Narrows."
The romance was undeveloped in my opinion, given the short time frame. It made the ultimate ending fall a little flat to me. I almost wish the romance wasn't a thing at all, and that the moves Bryn made throughout the book were motivated by her ambition alone. The same story trajectory could have occurred (proving herself a worthy member of the family, then charting her own course) but I think it would have been more empowering without the additional motivator of a potential romantic partner.

I was SO disappointed that she put in all this work into the tea house (to me, that was the legacy!) and then abandoned it. I wish she had leaned into her cunning and ability to make connections. She made some HUGE power moves at the end... and then left it all. Like, I think those moves would have really pushed her influence in the family and in the city. She could have been poised to be a major persona in the area. But ~romance~

THAT SAID, I did enjoy the book. I think it's something Netflix could cast Millie Bobby Brown in and get several weeks of "top ten movies watched" lol
