Books of Blood: Volumes One to Three by Clive Barker

4.0

The things Clive Barker writes about aren’t necessarily original—he’s a splatterpunk author if I had to pick a subgenre for him—but he does what he does with an unusual style for the subjects. Barker is classy is what I’m saying. He’s got this overwrought, Gothic sensibility that I really enjoy; like if Ann Radcliffe had written about ghost-filled pigs that eat people in the modern age, she would have written it like Barker. I don’t know; this collection is great, what do you want from me? Some of these short stories have been made into not-very-good movies but you should see The Midnight Meat Train anyway because one of my favorite directors made it and I feel bad that his first English movie was received so poorly. Clive Barker doesn’t translate well unless he’s doing it.
