Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

3.0

I had really high expectations for this book especially with all the high reviews and it being many people's favorite. I've read many classics, however this is probably the oldest of the ones I have read. The style of writing, switching between characters without really indicating it, was hard to keep up with at first. It took a while for me to get used to it, and understand who in the story was talking. I also felt that there was a lot of wordy chapters/paragraphs that were unnecessary to the story and just kept it long. The first half was probably my least favorite and it took me the longest to get through. I didn't feel that much was really going on up until the second half of the book.
Once I did reach that halfway mark however I started to enjoy it more, and I felt like the story was finally picking up, and there was more interaction with the main characters (something I'd been waiting for the whole time). It was incredibly interesting to read about how different things were back then, especially for women, and what was deemed proper. Expectations for a woman were set incredibly high and all were dependent upon marriage. I love that the main character, Elizabeth, stood up to these social norms in a lot of ways, and remained her own person despite what society expected of her.
