The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

4.0

*4.5

i loved this book. i loved it even more than the first one. i feel like i’m incapable of any intelligent thoughts about it because i loved it that much.

just like the duchess deal, it was so much fun and i found myself smiling and laughing the whole way through. however, i feel like the governess game leans more into serious topics, more so than the previous book. there are discussions of abandonment, death, panic attacks and disorders, real grief and trauma, and how those affect how you build a family.

i thought the premise was great and the set up of alex and chase in the previous book made me curious to pick this one up. their chance encounter in a bookstore and then the subsequent meeting where they believe the other doesn’t remember them was brilliant. chase hiring alex to be the governess to his wards just because alex was in the right place at the right time… just great.

speaking of the wards… rosamund and daisy added a lot of the humor and heart to the book. they were what moved a lot of the plot and inspired most of the antics that pushed alex and chase together. millicent also gets the award for best supporting character.

alex has quickly become one of my favorite romance heroines. she is smart, witty, beautiful, and unafraid to stand up for herself and what she wants.

chase was a classic rake and i loved it. i loved him and his big heart.

i would kill for a novella about them and what happens after the events of the book. i could have read 50 more pages and been just as happy. give me more chase and alex!!
