The body shaming is ridiculous for big and small women!
I don't know that I personally would judge this as a thriller or mystery.
Butter actually covers a lot of serious subjects for discussion such as: feminist debates, friendships, gender roles, marriage, personal values, victim blaming, and work ethics.
I think it is so cool that this is Asako Yuzuki's first novel published in English. I don't believe I've ever read a translated manuscript. While the core plot and characters remain the same, the translation may involve adjustments to maintain clarity, flow, and cultural relevance for the English-speaking audience.
I don't get to read Japanese culture very often, especially not in realistic fiction!!
While "Butter" by Asako Yuzuki is a fictional novel, it's inspired by a real-life case of a serial killer in Japan, known as the "Konkatsu Killer," Kanae Kijima. The novel's setting, including locations like Tokyo and surrounding villages, is also largely based on real places in Japan.
>>>> "The recipes for the French dishes and cakes featured on Kajii's blog were far beyond Rika, reading to her like arcane magic spells hailing from another world, but this tarako pasta, which required that it's components be simply mixed together, seem like something she could manage, and what was more, she had succeeded in locating the necessary ingredients at the late - night supermarket. " Page 37 "Butter" by Asako Yuzuki
I don't approve of nicotine products, but fun fact: Mevius (メビウス, Mebiusu), mentioned in the book, is a Japanese brand of cigarettes, currently owned and manufactured by Japan Tobacco.
Another fun fact: Snowmelt systems with pipes are real. It totally goes against everything I was taught about clearing my car windshield in the ice.
