The Burning God by R.F. Kuang

3.5/5

The way this final installment ended is the only right way to end this series.
It was the only right way to end Rin.

SpoilerI missed Nezha in this book. I wish I could've gotten more of him.
The Trifecta storyline was kind of butchered and ruined.
I didn't like the new shamans, too late of an introduction, and no actual impact.

Rin's descent into madness, the power that took over her was unbearable to witness. She became everything she accused everyone else of being - she became the reason her country was in shambles. And she could not see reason. Some of the final pages, where her anger is towards "her" people, people of Tikany, were terrible to read. She lost all sense of direction and could not understand the wish of the people that there be no more war. It's always just another battle, just another skirmish, just another siege, just another war with her.
I was so angry with her. I actually wished her death for so long. It came, and it was very well executed. She got to rest, she got the enact her final act of vengeance towards Nezha and she gave her country a fighting chance for survival. That's more than I thought I would get from her.

In the end she was a war criminal, a murderer, a megalomaniac and an unreasonable force of nature that could not be allowed to run rampant across Nikan anymore. In her final days she was still resentful, paranoid, insane and entitled. Committing suicide was her act of mercy towards her people, but also towards herself. And I resent her very much for Venka.

Great book nonetheless.

edit: One of the things that twist my heart a little are the parallels between rin, nezha and kitay and the trifecta. the destruction and genocides of Mugen and Speer; the love and betrayal of Riga and Daji mirrored in the love Nezha had for Rin - and his betrayal of her. The burden of rebuilding and leading a nation only falling on one of them. Their friendships, love, loyalty and hurt they inflicted on each other. The most powerful people in the world fallen victim to each other.
