Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews

After the beautiful, striking Dollanganger father dies in a motor accident, the mother, Corrine, is forced to reevaluate her life with her four young children. With the husband gone and Corrine lacking the skills needed to find a job to support the family, she decides that they can’t afford to stay where they are; there’s a 30 year mortgage on the house, nothing they own is fully paid for, and everything is being repossessed. But Corrine’s estranged parents are rich. Really rich. And so she writes and writes and writes to her mother until a response is finally received. The four kids and Corrine will be allowed to go and stay with her parents—the Foxworths—on one condition: the kids will have to stay tucked away in the attic until Corrine can get back on her father’s good side. You see, the father doesn’t know about the kids and Corrine did something very, very bad when she was 18 that caused her father to disinherit her. What follows is a very dark coming of age tale.

This story was certainly interesting. A wealthy family with a villainous grandmother, a neglectful mother, lies, gaslighting, a pair of incestual children, wicked twists, abuse, and a whole lot more, so enter at your own risk. It’s not “boo” scary but it is definitely horrific what the children had to go through. I do think some blubber could have been excised from the middle but overall it was a book worth the read.
P.S. Why the hell is this marketed as young adult?
