This book has been compared to From Blood and Ash, A Curse So Dark and Lonely, and Sarah J. Maas’s work—none of which I’m a huge fan of. That should have been my warning. But instead, I fell for the marketing buzzwords: enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, high fantasy setting, riveting plotline with intrigue and politicking.

I’m a little annoyed with myself—like a moth to a flame, I picked it up with high expectations.

But it’s booooring. The main girl is painfully bland. She never uses her powers, complains constantly, and mostly just… does nothing. The guy is equally forgettable: good-looking, rich, aloof, powerful—and that’s about it. No other personality traits to speak of. So I guess they’re well matched. As for chemistry? Nonexistent. At one point, I found myself hoping she’d just run off with the guard and be done with it. (She didn’t. Sadly.)

The rest of the story was executed with the same level of thrilling mediocrity.
So yeah. I want my time back. That’s what I’m saying.
