Orange Is the New Black: My Year In a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman

challenging dark emotional informative reflective sad tense medium-paced

4.0

I went into this book with many pre-conceived notions and opinions from others — many about the TV show series and how they had heard about it making light of incarceration. The book, however, and my reading of the book was incredible.

I could clearly see how much thought Kerman put into the book and I appreciated her recognition of privilege and her vulnerability. I loved her detailed accounts of the people she encountered and how it shed light on how powerful female friendships can be and how they can find you in the most mysterious of places and strangest of ways, connecting otherwise opposite people.

I’ve never read a book quite like this and I just loved it.
