Tower of Dawn
by Sarah J. Maas
What do I even make of this book 😩
Firstly, I feel that this is a very generous 3 😅 Mainly because it’s easy to get through and requires almost no brain power.
Secondly, the writing is so terrible. For this being her 10th published book at this point it’s crazy to me that the quality is so overlooked. Especially with the redundancies. If she says “__ incarnate” or “__ indeed” one more time I may have an aneurism (if I have not already suffered plenty already).
The entirety of Part 1 was a drag and did not need to be as long as it was. This whole book should’ve been 300-350 pages max and could almost be considered a novella. Also the pacing was so bizarre; so much time was taken up establishing this new location and set of characters that any progression with events felt sudden and rushed.
Part 2 was more entertaining but still not super necessary to plot progression which, being the second to last book in the series, made every page feel like “please can we just get back into the story already”. The little sprinklings of information we got were nice, but most of the second half was just random stuff 😅
Note: there’s nothing wrong with side quests or taking time to let readers connect with characters, however if you just suddenly decide to make that choice this late in a series then it’s just incredibly disengaging and ruins the series’ pacing.
Also, SJM hates masculinity and I cannot be proven wrong 😒 She makes all of her male characters jacked with muscle but God forbid they do ANYTHING manly or protect anyone or stand for any values because all of SJM’s copy-paste female characters will flame them for it. It’s just exhausting. Let a man be a man, especially when most of SJM’s female characters have the collective IQ of 8 but infinite plot armor.
I wanted to love this series as much as I’ve seen others do, but it’s proving to be a hard flop the further it progresses. One more book to go so let’s see how it ends 😵💫
