X-Men (2024-) #2 by Jed Mackay
2.0
It’s hard to understand if I’m enjoying this series or just on this ride because I want to hang with the X-Men. I think the central premise of a mysterious organization creating some kind of mutant is interesting, but I feel the immediate pivot to an action-oriented saga doesn’t give much time for character dynamics or growth.
This book felt very exposition heavy. There’s exposition in the dialogue which makes it read badly and inorganically.
I also don’t know why every single character is snarky. There’s no differentiating personality here—everyone is a bad high school tv show knock off. It’s so dull to read, not to mention irritating. Imagine trying to get a job done, and everyone’s a grade a douche bag to everyone else. Jeez. And Quire, I swear, needs to learn some manners.
I don’t understand the art either. Stegman has one face template and every character is drawn to the same template — and it’s obvious because the template has an upturned nose and thick round lips. That’s such an odd choice. But what’s even more weird is that the character faces are not consistent. In closeups, it’s obvious he’s either drawn his own style or maybe used a different template. I just don’t get the thinking here. If there’s not enough time to do the work, then what’s the point of these big studios pretending like they’re putting out distinctive art?
The colours are amazing though. Garcia and Sifuentes-Sujo have done an outstanding job of bringing such vibrancy to the suits and landscapes.
I’m so underwhelmed by the writing here and the characterizations. There’s really nothing here at all to become invested in the story, and definitely not the characters. I’m going to stick around, but would a newbie do that?
