This book is a re-imagining of The Little Mermaid (which I didn’t realize when going into the book), but with pirates, sirens and murder. Lira’s mother is essentially Ursula, but this version of Ariel and Prince Eric are just so much more interesting. It is a darker version of the original story, with a lot more adventure and violence. My main criticism with the book was that it started a bit slowly so it took me a while to get into it, and then that I wish there had been more of a clear, slow burn with those characters. It felt like their romantic relationship wasn’t hinted at early enough, and it definitely could have benefited from a bit longer to develop.
