The Betrothed
by Kiera Cass
This was.... an experience.
Thankfully I buddy read this with a couple of friends, so I didnt have to suffer alone, but this was NOT the silly romp I expected after the wackiness that is the Selection series.
I hate to be so blunt in my reviews, but this was bad. It's amazing to me at all that this book passed through - allegedly - multiple editors. It was... worse than a first draft. I'm honestly appalled at how boring this book ended up being, despite the premise. A steamy love triangle! A girl betrothed to a king, but being swayed by a commoner! How can you mess that up?
Nothing happens, until the end when something INSANE happens out of nowhere with no leadup.
The characters don't feel like fleshed out people.
GLARING instalove. Hollis decided she was willing to give up the crown for a boy she's barely had a solid conversation with, after a combined maybe 15 minutes together over the first 200 pages?
No one earns anything that happens to them, and no one suffers any consequences for their actions.
I don't even know how to put into words the thoughts going through my head upon reading it, but this was not good. Yikes.
