Girl Last Seen by Nina Laurin

3.0

I'd wanted something light and fluffy after Dispossessed. Sadly, my giant pile of books includes zero light and fluffy at the moment, so I picked this one. It is the opposite of light and fluffy. It is dark and gritty and disturbing.

When Ella was 10, she was kidnapped. She was found on the side of the road 3 years later, bleeding, scarred and pregnant. Her assailant was never found. Ten years later, another girl has been taken. A girl who looks a lot like her.

Ella has become Laine in an attempt to move on with her life. But she has had a really hard time. She is barely getting by and has developed a pretty severe drug habit to cope with the trauma of her childhood. She tries to block things out but when little Olivia goes missing, she is determined to keep her from going what she went through.

This book is tough. It speaks of trauma and child abuse and how hard it is just to breathe sometimes. I didn't necessarily like it but I couldn't put it down. But there is a sense of hope and redemption in the end.
