I'm reading a translated version of this online. I'm not sure if the sound effect thing is normal for light novels, but it's really weird. Also, Raphtalia at times would straight up speak in Japanese despite it being a translation. I'm not sure why the translator left it that way. It might have been the specific manner in which she was speaking that couldn't be properly conveyed otherwise, but it was a little off putting.

A lot of this is repeat for me because I started watching the anime before reading this. Overall, I super like the premise for this story. I also love the main character. I'll admit, I feel hypocritical saying that when I always give Sword Art Online such a hard time because Kirito is such an ass but everyone loves him. I'd argue that Naofumi has had to work a lot harder for people to like him. Also, the bar for Raphtalia to like him after being poorly treated as a slave is pretty low.

I really like how the light novel shows the Shield upgrades. I love skill trees. I almost wish this was a real game just so I could work hard to unlock them all. I'm super interested to see what all gets unlocked, especially since one of the big differences that is there already from the anime is that Naofumi doesn't have the two-headed dog shield.

I also like reading this volume because the reader was left more in the dark as to Raphtalia's sudden growth. It wasn't until Naofumi finally and truly saw her that we were made aware of her change in appearance.

I'm hoping that by reading the light novel, I'll be able to find out more in-depth how the "curse" works.
