The Orphan Master's Son
by Adam Johnson
Adam Johnson is clearly a good writer and there are aspects of this book that are quite fascinating. The idea of a dictator, propaganda, and the eerie idea of "plucking" victims keeps the reader engaged, especially since we are fairly certain that these actions continue to happen in parts of the world. I guess the book didn't do it for me the same reason that most depressing novels about oppressive parts of the world don't interest me. Yes, there are elements of suspense, romance, etc, but in the end it turned into a typical 'those poor asians' story written by a western author. Maybe I should leave this genre for a bit.
