City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare
3.0

I adore The Mortal Instruments. I really do. But City of Fallen Angels fell short for me, as did Clockwork Angel.

I can't even describe what it is I feel disappointed in. The plot is interesting enough, the characters are the same lovable characters we've always known, all the conflict and drama is there... but I don't feel the tension. I don't feel that gripping-onto-your-seat-knuckles-turning-white feeling while I read this series anymore. I don't laugh out loud over the jokes or sigh or want to bash my head against the wall.

I feel like the characters are missing a lot of their drive - Clary's motivation isn't to save her mother anymore, it's to make sure her boyfriend loves her - or that we are looking at the same used plots over and over again:

A. Trying to push the blame/point fingers at a villain so much that it's obvious that the "suspects" are innocents
B. Jace still hates himself.
C. Blatant foreshadowing

That said, there were couple of funny lines that made me chuckle out loud. I liked how we were given a bigger glimpse of Simon in CoFA, whereas I always thought him annoying in the first three books. The character of Jordan Kyle was interesting and new (I like him!)

And then the ending. I felt like the ending was the only part of the book where something actually *happened* and the plot moved *forward.* But because it ended the way it did, I already have a feeling how the next book will be starting out... (See point B.)
