The Avenue of the Giants by Marc Dugain

3.0

Welp, this book is slightly terrifying. It shows how well (and how easily) a serial killer can hide his crimes. It’s even more terrifying because the book is based on a true story. The author does a fabulous job of creating a complicated main character. Al Kenner seems like a fairly normal guy from the outside, but the reader has access to his thoughts, so we know that something is badly wrong with him. The reader doesn’t find out how twisted Al is until the end. Al’s frustration at the world really comes through the page.

The book has some translation issues. It was originally written in French, but I can’t read French, so I read the English version. There are a lot of typos, and I had to reread sentences occasionally because they confused me.

I also think the book could have been shorter. The story covers most of the character’s life, and I got bored with parts of it. Especially the long conversations with the therapist in the psychiatric hospital. I just wanted the plot to get moving.

If you’re interested in serial killers, I’d recommend this novel.
