Motherless Brooklyn
by Jonathan Lethem
Uuuf. This novel did not resonate with me and by the time I was halfway through, it had become a taxing chore to keep reading (in hindsight I should have abandoned ship). The narrator's Tourettic dialogue and compulsions were intriguing at first, but like so many of the characters who interact with Lionel, I quickly found myself annoyed by the wordplay, silently urging the story to get on with it. As far as the plot, it felt convoluted and haphazard without the "aha!" moments that mystery lovers crave and savor; Lethem then discloses all in a 2-page exposition that reveals how thinly layered the story really was. 2 stars because I did enjoy the first few chapters, especially about Lionel's adolescence.
