I have mixed feelings on this book. There were so many elements I loved: the setting, the ecological/environmentalism aspects, the mystery. However, I wasn’t expecting there to be a love story thrown in and it really threw me for a loop. I’m not usually fan of romance books, and this book was not tagged as romance anywhere that I saw, so I really wasn’t expecting it. The instant-love/deserted-island-love story — I just wasn’t buying it. (It didn’t help that I read much of it via audiobook and the narrator who reads Dom’s chapters basically whispers in a low seductive voice the whole time. I came for a thriller, not smut.)
In addition, I feel like there was one too many far fetched disasters- the humpback whale storylines were a bit wild.
I will say the mystery and the setting kept be going, and I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s immersive writing that really makes you feel like you are there on this island.
Side note: I had so many memories of my trip to Antarctica pop up in my head while I read her descriptions of the island, its history, and the animals who live there. (For example: the rusted old “penguin barrels” on Shearwater reminded me of Deception Island in Antarctica which used to be a whaling station and has similar old rusted whaling boilers).
