You Are Not Alone by Leah Cupps

4.0

You Are Not Alone was an interesting read. I will start by saying that one part did throw me for a loop but in my defense Claire did have cats and seemed bookish so how was I not supposed to like her? No spoilers though. Now that is out of the way I will start with the positive. The pacing of the book was brilliant. I liked how we slowly were learning about Tess and the island. It had a little bit of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer vibes going for it which I really enjoyed. I also liked Gucci the Cat and surprisingly Hudson.
Now the things I wasn’t so fond of. Unfortunately, Natalie for me as a main character was incredibly hard to care about. That sounds mean I know but her personality, particularly in her point of view sections came across as self-centered, a little snobbish and rather vain. This was a bit of a problem because I wasn’t overly bothered if she lived or died throughout most of novel. Now on the one hand this is testament to the Cupps writing that they can make me dislike a character and make them believable but on the other when it’s a thriller where you want readers to feel attached or concerned for the protagonist it can let the narrative down. Thankfully because we have Hudson around as well that does help balance it out.
I did also feel that Natalie doesn’t seem to fully grow in the novel at all. In fact at the end she seems to return to her old ways but that is my own pet peeve and others may have a different take away. That being said I did enjoy the novel overall. The twist got me because I was distracted by cats which is always the way. The pacing was good overall and it was a generally enjoyable read. I’d certainly recommend to fans of thrillers and for a good travel read too.
