The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee

4.0

I enjoyed this historical fiction book about Jo, a 17 year old who is smart but also a "saucebox," living in Atlanta in 1890. Her feisty words get her fired from one job and into trouble around town, but it's her words and her wit that end up saving her. Fans of Bridgeston will enjoy the anonymous “Dear Miss Sweetie” column. References to early feminism (and how it was wholly white), first bicycles, horse racing, and racism. As someone who grew up going to horse races, I enjoyed the horse talk and racing.
