I just put this down, and I am covered in feelings. I can still feel the dried tears on my face.
This is an amazing King on a number of levels. He made me invest enough in the characters to cry which is a big deal but not particularly shocking since character development is his forte. It's was also refreshing to read something set in the late 50s and early 60s that paints a realistic portrait of the era. In addition to the positive aspects that are typically cherry-picked to present this time as glossier than life, he includes the social conflicts, sexism, racism, and homophobia of the period.
To top all that off, the story is a delight, and the skillful maintenance of tension throughout some 850 pages is beyond impressive. Definitely one of his best works.
CONTENT ADVISORY:racism, racist language, homophobia, homophobic language, sexism, sexist language, intimate partner abuse, violence against children
