A breathtaking Black horror novel by the incomparable Miss Tananarive Due. After reading her short story in Jordan Peele's recent collection, I felt drawn to explore more of her work. I deeply admire how subtly she uses horror conventions throughout this book, slowly amplifying things until they come to an abruptly violent end. Some may not like the slow burn of the plot, but I (as someone who enjoys character-focused stories) thought this was an integral part of what made the book work. It allowed us to intimately get to know Hilton and his family, the latter of whom motivate Hilton's every decision, fear, and sacrifice. And it makes the ultimate conclusion all the more emotionally impactful. Highly recommend!
