House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas

4.0

This book focuses on Bryce Quinlan, a half-human, half-fae who is known for being a party girl together with her bestfriend, Danika Fendyr. This bestfriend of hers was a werewolf who was predicted to become the greatest werewolf of them all. Unfortunately, she and her pack were killed by a demon. Two years later, the killings similar to what happened to Danika started again. Bryce Quinlan, together with Hunt Athalar, a slave-angel, were tasked to investigate and find out who is summoning this demon to do a killing-spree.

First off, this book was really slow for me. I had to reach around 400 + pages until it kinda piqued my interest. Although, I understand that there were a lot of world building going on and in all honesty it was a pretty interesting world to live in. What initially didn’t really interest me were the characters, specifically the main once. All throughout the book, Bryce was being portrayed as this bad-ass female MC with a lot of flaws but all I saw were her flaws and it just annoyed me all throughout the first 80% of the book. But everything changed in the last 100 pages or so because everything was explained and I was able to see who Bryce really is. She was this selfless strong woman who doesn’t care even if people think the worst of her. It was nicely written that even I, a mere reader, got annoyed and thought the worse of Bryce. In the end, she was really a bad ass. However, up until the end I did not find any chemistry between her and Hunt Athalar, I did not look forward to any of their interactions and I certainly did not feel or see their attraction towards each other. I appreciate, however, Ruhn Danaan, prince of the fae, and he was actually a very likeable character in the book and I hope to see more from him in the future.

Back to the chapters, again I said it took me a long time to actually get interested. And a part of me was disappointed because once I did get interested it was not consistent? There were chapters in the book were I really breezed through the pages and got me really excited then the next chapter would just suddenly feel flat and boring to me? It was an ongoing cycle thus it did not made me look forward to what will happen next. BUT AGAIN, the last 100 pages was the saving grace of this book. In those 100 pages, I felt a lot of emotions and I even cried!!!! Like I expected some of the twists and turns of the book but I did not expect to cry!!! So yeah, initially I was going to rate the book a 3.5 but the last 100 pages put up a fight so giving it a 4 now!!!
