Ways of Seeing
by John Berger
Even though I give this book 5 stars, it will only appeal to those interested in visual images. My own interest is photography but there's a lot of cross over with art, art history, and publicity/advertisements. Even though this was published originally in the 1970s, the world has only gotten more visual since then with digital photography and social media so it remains very timely. Why I find this work so important is it doesn't accept conventional interpretations (I don't know much about art history, some of these essays really challenge previous interpretations) and does offer new ways of seeing. This book only offers a 'taste' of the art and I'm sure the intent is for the reader to do their own sampling. The illustrations are small and in black and white. However, they do show what is being examined and are not a substitute for visiting museums and seeing as many originals as possible. I could relate well based on viewing past art exhibits at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. I need to find more stuff by Mr. Berger and the folks who collaborates with.
