This is my first time writing a review. I rarely even rate books because I rarely feel strongly enough to have an opinion on the worthiness of someone’s work.
I feel strongly about this book, however. My strong feelings say 1-star, but my kind heart forced my finger to select 3-stars. I applaud what the author started and what it has become, and I also love Elphaba’s name and its variations, so let’s say I gave two additional stars for that reason.
This book is too long to be as disappointing as it is. There was ample time to fill in the many gaps created by the author’s storytelling. It was both too much and not enough. At times the story dragged on and other times, the important times, it felt rushed. Elphaba’s story ended with me questioning her character development. There was such potential, but no growth. What are readers to glean from that?
These opinions come with no interpolation because I have not yet had the privilege of seeing the Broadway production nor any movie adaptation. Though I did read this book specifically to prepare to watch the most recent movie featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. And though I did not favor how this book was written, I’m now involved and will not feel this journey is complete until I finish the series.
