I thoroughly enjoyed this as a piece of really luscious historical fiction. I also loved the sort of story within a story—a historical fiction about a historical fiction.

I thought the main character was flawed enough to be realistic and yet competent enough to be someone who drove their own plot.

As a motif I loved the colors and embroidery motif.

I love a good female-centric piece of historical fiction that isn’t just centered on war triumphs. This was very feminine in its theming.

My only critique of of the work is that some of the themes (adultery, slavery, disability) are sometimes a little too obviously viewed in a modern lens. That’s not really a specific criticism of this work, but more of a commentary on the genre. If you’re expecting perfect historical accuracy then I’d steer you away from historical fiction. That being said I did find that there weren’t any glaring anachronisms that had me rolling my eyes, and if there were, they went undetected.
