T. Kingfisher can't miss for me.

This was a really well written story that just builds and builds in tension and horror; I don't do horror very well, but this is the perfect kind of horror for me that grows gradually and is relatively grounded and contained enough that I can chicken my way through it.

It's very short so character complexities and development don't have a ton of room to grow, but I love what Kingfisher managed to fit in for the culturally-specifially-gendered main character Easton and their fictional(?) Gallacia home country. You don't get as much background for the other characters, but their personalities are distinct and unique and come out through the dialogue and story; most importantly they have that lightheartedness to them under the surface which makes them fun to read about, even if they're serious characters in serious moments. Probably my favorite other character besides Easton is Hob. He's Easton's horse (or Easton is his Gallacian) and he has a really amusing personality, and he doesn't let you forget that he's an important character as well.

This wrapped up really well and is self contained. Easton is in book 2 as I understand it; I'm excited to see more of them in the next book!
