Second reading years after the first. Mr. Grossman's THE MAGICIANS series is a favorite, and rather than reread that for the nth time, I revisited this story. As I remembered, it's an intriguing, complicated set-up with basically no payoff. This could have been better if it had just kept going. 

I'm sure I'll reread THE MAGICIANS before the year is up.
