When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by asha bandele, Patrisse Khan-Cullors
5.0

This book is brilliant in every way. Patrisse’s story, her growing into the loving force she is today, is illuminating and always compelling. The entire time I read her work I kept making connections to current events and other writers. It is expansive and will add depth to your understanding of Black Lives Matter. As my friend said: Patrisse is so bloody cool!

More specifically, as a teacher and a person who has worked in health care, Partisse’s account of her brothers mental health crisis and the trauma he experienced in the system is searing and real. The way she found to support him and how she shares that example with us is so important. There are no throw away people and all of us can do more to protect and love our friends and family in crisis. She is an example for us all. This book is my favorite of the year so far.
