The characters and forced proximity plot line are rehashes from many other romantasy novels, though Guanzon has a deft handling of the slow burn, enemies to lovers trope. Dialogue is unrealistically zingy but not unenjoyable. I think the world development and overarching plot is interesting and complex enough that the next book in the series will be worth a read. Since this is the author’s first novel, I hope the sequel will improve as the characters take on their own flavors to distinguish them from “just another plucky FMC with somber, powerful MMC mentor.”
