Clubland: The Fabulous Rise and Murderous Fall of Club Culture by Frank Owen

adventurous dark informative mysterious tense medium-paced

3.5

Frank Owens really fancies himself as one of the last gonzo journalists. His account of the inner financial workings of Peter Gatien's nightclubs and the drug rings inside of them is thorough and impeccable, but I can tell he really is more interested in the mafioso angle than the sociological phenomena of the 90s queer scene. I wished this was more about the actual club kids than the white guy puppetmasters, but without the puppetmasters the kids would not have K. James St. James' account is a must-read companion to this one if you want a more fleshed-out vision of Clubland.
