The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf
3.5
dark mysterious sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

The format kept things interesting and while there were a few twists, the book was pretty predictable. The subject matter was much darker than I anticipated. I could have gone without a lot of the details shared around the traumatic parts. The book didn’t feel totally complete but still a good read.

Spoilers ahead -

A few things were never explained - what happened to the childhood dog? Why did the person the community suspected burn those things in the fire? Why was the bloodied rag on his property? What was the deal with Becky dropping a rag earlier that day on the property? Was that the rag? It was incredibly interesting reading about the case while it was being investigated but it suddenly dropped off, so that was disappointing. Obviously no one was charged back then, but to leave it when a big piece of evidence was discovered is annoying.
