Dataclysm: Who We Are (When We Think No One's Looking) by Christian Rudder
3.75
This was an interesting read, although there are some conflicting messages. But then again… you can’t expect people to be consistent (it’s a book about how people behave and make decisions). I probably won’t do too much with the information because I am who I am, but it’s good to be aware of some biases you might have.
The author keeps saying what he’s doing is legal and ethical, but he also shares specific messages sent by people when he also claims he can’t see people’s specific messages. At some point he got blanket photo authorisation from a group of women, but did they know what, exactly, he was going to do with the photos? (He was using them as examples of women that would either get a very negative or a very positive reaction on their dating profile.)
Another qualm I have is that the author sometimes draws conclusions from data that aren’t necessarily the only explanation.
