Mahashweta by Sudha Murty

“Of the thousands of flowers that blossom on a tree only a few will bear fruit. And out of those few fruits, insects and squirrels will eat some. The tree does not keep anything for itself. Does that mean that the life of the tree is wasted?”

"Mahashweta" is a story of a very beautiful woman, Anupama, who is from a poor family. Anand, a wealthy doctor, gets attracted to her because of her beauty and theatrical skills. They eventually get married. Anand go abroad for further studies where Anupama is supposed to join him in 2 months. But what happens next is very unfortunate. Anupama spots a white patch in her body which changes her life. For good or bad, you decide. This is a tale about Anupama and her struggle with leukoderma. But what she actually struggles is the social stigma that comes with it. The horrifying cruelty she is subjected to.

This book portraits the inner strength of a woman who discovers herself when there is no one to lend her a helping hand. The story throws light to how insensitive our society behaves towards a person who is suffering from leukoderma.

Sudha Murthy is a beautiful writer. She writes such soul stirring stories which will compel you to question the society we live in. I love the subjects she choses to write about. I love her work, both on and off paper. A must read !
