i think reading this confirmed that patrick süskind is my favourite author. he consistently writes incredible books. the message in the story of mr. sommer is more subtle than in perfume and the pigeon but it's still strong. i like that this was open-ended and lets you think about the ways mr. sommer and the main character affect each other without ever speaking. at first glance this looks to be a light-hearted book, and some parts genuinely made me laugh, but it has darker themes and is reflective of how we perceive people around us.
