Good Neighbors
by Sarah Langan
I've been in a major funk with thrillers lately. The past few thrillers I've read had such similar plots and character tropes that I've felt as if I've read the same book just by different authors. So I decided to take a break and skip reading anything from my favorite genre entirely for the past few weeks. But this unique and addictive story completely broke me out of my thriller slump!
I'm going to be brief with the blurb because the less you know going into this one the better!
This story is set in the near future where the earth is experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. The Wilde family, Gertie, Arlo, and their two children move to Maple Street, a suburban neighborhood on long island. Maple Street is ruled by Rhea, whenever Rhea says jump the rest of the neighborhood asks how high.
Forewarning, this book deals with some heavy topics such as the death of a child, sexual abuse, and drug addiction.
From the very start, I was immediately pulled into this story. This is a pretty straightforward thriller. You learn in the beginning how the book will end but you don't know the details or the whys.
The characters in this story were very dimensional with such diverse personalities. Even though most of the characters in this story are very unlikeable, I was still enthralled by them and I couldn't wait to see what they would do next.
I loved the underlying themes of this story about what happens when we blindly follow social pressures just to fit in. This book goes into alarming detail about the drastic effects climate change will have on the earth soon if we as a planet do not get involved. Good Neighbors also speaks on the aftermath of involving children in false/malicious gossip and how a few words can ultimately ruin someone's life.
Sarah Langan’s writing is nothing short of superb. In an ocean of thrillers that use the same plot and character tropes over and over again, Good Neighbors is one of the most standout thrillers I've read recently with a completely unique and original story. Good Neighbors has made its way onto my list of favorite thrillers of 2021! I look forward to reading anything that Sarah Langan writes next.
A massive thanks to Atria Thrillers for the gifted copy!
