The Last Command by Timothy Zahn

5.0

This may no longer be canon, but this was such a great series. Thrawn is an amazing villain, nearly infallible and coldly brilliant. Something is terrifying about a villain who is so in control that he never needs to raise his voice to exert his power. The mad Jedi C'baoth is another unnerving character. He is terrifyingly strong in the force but with the hubris to believe he can control the galaxy by remaking the minds of others in his image. Then there is Mara Jade. Torn between her memories of service to the empire and the kindness shown to her by Luke and Leia, she must find her path to peace and a place to truly belong. The Noghri are an alien race new to me in this series. Their fighting skills make them invaluable allies to whoever has their allegiance, and their loyalty once won is unshakable. There are so many nail-biting moments in this book as it winds to the conclusion with the final confrontation between Thrawn and the New Republic and the mission to the cloning facility at Mt. Tantiss and C'baoth. By the end of the book, I couldn't stop reading. It was a wild ride and I loved every minute of it
